The Write Horse publishes two issues annually, one in the autumn and one in the spring, each based on a designated theme. We consider written and visual nonfiction submissions from emerging and established writers that are correspond to the specified theme of each issue. We read submissions from August 1st to June 30.

TWH publishes work in a range of formats, including prose, poetry, photography, visual arts, video, and audio files/music.  We will not knowingly publish submissions that are slanderous, libelous, racist, sexist, ageist, or otherwise intentionally discriminatory or offensive. All works must be original and must not be subject to copyright restrictions. For each issue, the journal publishes one submission per selected author/artist. After its final review, our Editorial Staff will notify each submitter of the status of their work.

All submissions must be sent in digital format via our online submission system. Text submissions should be typed and submitted in a file format that can readily be edited (Microsoft Word and Google Doc are preferred). Prose submissions should not exceed 3,000 words. Poetry submissions may be single spaced, with one poem per page. Up to five poems may be submitted per issue.

Photographs, paintings, drawings, illustrations, or other visual artwork should be submitted in a format that can be opened and manipulated in Photoshop CS5 (e.g., JPG, PNG, TIF, BMP, and GIF). Submitted images should not include vectors or layers. Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and submitted as a URL. Audio files must be compatible with  iTunes, Google Music, or other online audio services.

Please include complete, accurate contact information with all submissions. For written submissions, please paginate and include your name and the title of the work on each page. All work should be carefully proofread (ideally out loud) before it is submitted.

The Write Horse submissions are reviewed by our editorial review board. We reserve the right to edit all submissions for accuracy and consistency. Each submission is edited according to the spelling, grammar, and punctuation conventions of American English; we follow the conventions detailed in the Chicago Manual of Style.  In its editing, The Write Horse strives to preserve each submitter’s unique voice and artistic intent over absolute grammatical or idiomatic correctness. A style sheet containing more details about our editing policies is available upon request.
